brian: we've also got music live in the studio from scottish favorites the trash can sinatras and we'll be talking to them a wee bit later on. but right now here they are with 'freetime'
(tcs play 'freetime')
brian: well thanks for the moment to frank reader, john douglas and paul livingston. the trash can sinatras, who will be back with another couple of songs a wee bit later. if you haven't already got a ticket for their gig at king tut's on saturday, then i'm afraid tonight is your only chance to hear them.
(andrew collins was on)
brian: still with me are frank, john and paul of the trash can sinatras, we'll have another song from them in just a moment or two, but for the moment guys welcome to the program.
tcs: thanks a lot
brian: any confessions about terrible childhood you want to share with us?
frank: ah, terrible adult-hood...
brian: yeah, it's not where you start, it's where you end up that really counts isn't it. now listen, you've spoken to andrew collins presumably in his nme days?
john: ah, we met him in minneapolis, he came across to review a gig, it seemed alright.
frank: this was before the' tele addicts' days, really, he seemed unassuming....he didn't bring his diaries or anything like that to show in the dressing room.
brian: well frank and john i think paul is the strong silent type. tell me a wee bit about the new album. cuz you're recording this in a slightly different way, an unusual way.
john: unusual in the sense that we're funding it ourselves, i suppose. it's gone really well, we're just about to start mixing it and we're really happy with what we've got done. done it at riverside studios down in busby. got some string players in it playing on a few tunes. norman blake actually popped in and did some singing on it. it took us a while...we sort of set on the proper songs, once we got them chosen we were pretty happy boys.
brian: i'm pretty clear on the downside to financing yourself is, you have to foot the bill for everything. what's the upside, presumably you don't have a producer giving you instructions on how to sequence the songs or wanting to add a few oboes or cellos here or there where you don't want them. what else is a plus about it?
john: no pressure really. when you're recording on a record label, there's a lot of pressure. you play songs to the head honchos and they pick one or two songs that they think are singles and you feel a bit uptight about recording them and ended up a bit confused.
frank: i think attention gets spread more evenly to each song, as well. you don't feel that a pressure's put on say one or two songs, more than others even though you're maybe not party to it, so it creeps into your mind. it just felt that each one was getting the attention is deserved and maybe that wasn't the case in the past. |

brian: are we going to hear the difference, will trash can fans say this sounds different from the last one, this sounds like a change in direction, which is what the music critics and fans are always looking out for.
john: um, it's obviously us, it's obviously still us and i suppose it will have a bit of the wisdom we've gained in the past few years. radically different, no, i don't think so.
brian: well listen, you've got a couple of other songs to do for us this evening. this one's called what women do to men, do you just want to set it up for us.
john: this is a song that paul wrote, it has shades of cole porter, i think.
(tcs play 'what women do to men')
brian: beautiful song, that's the trash can sinatras, and what women do to men. i can see now why paul stays out of the interviews, you write songs like that, you don't really need to say very much. frank, i wanted to ask you briefly about the gig on saturday. it's sold out already, isn't it?
frank: yeah it has and it's quite surprising, really, i don't know who these people are. the only contact we have with the outside world is the website. we really started to get the impression thateverybody that liked us was on the website and the messageboard, what have you. then we do gigs and it turns out none of them know we've got a website. it's good though, it's great.
brian: there's something special about a hometown gig as well.
frank: yeah, but, we haven't played irvine for a long time, i suppose.
brian: adopted hometown! well listen, good luck with that and good luck with the album when it's finished. any idea roughly when it may be coming out?
john: hopefully the summer
brian: fantastic. well stick with us and give us another song later in the program...
brian: we've just about time for a last song from this evening's special guests, the trash can sinatras. do remember they're playing at king tut's in glasgow on saturday. though if you haven't already got a ticket, i'm afraid this is your only chance to hear them. this is the last one from them tonight, this is 'got carried away'.
(tcs play 'got carried away')
