Trashcan Sinatras - Fez
Rating: A-
Named for the New York City nightclub where this acoustic live album was recorded over two days last December, “Fez” shows Scottish pop heroes Trashcan Sinatras in a most attractive light. Much like an in-store appearance at Tempe's Stinkweeds Record Exchange last fall, the quintet's songs here are stripped back to their essence of wry, knowing lyrics and gentle melodies. They sparkle in the simple setting. With softly strummed acoustic guitars and subtle percussion providing the background, singer Francis Reader's shy vocals (and beautiful brogue) are front and center, with the band chiming in on heavenly harmonies. The generous 21-song, nearly 80-minute set draws from the breadth of the group's career, including highlights from last year's excellent comeback album “Weightlifting.” It's a testament to the quality of the band's songwriting and performance skills that, given the album's intentionally minimalist aesthetic, it never drags. “Fez” is a great live compilation for longtime fans and a perfect primer for new ones.
