frank = frank reader
john = john douglas

gideon: our first live session of the week comes from the trash can sinatras, who are here ahead of the show at london's barfly tonight. there's a new lp nearly ready in the offing, about to be with us, i believe. so good mornng to paul and stephen and john and frank. how you doing fellas?

tcs: good morning, thank you very much.

gideon: thanks for dropping by and before we get into ongoing trash can news, what's the first tune you'd like to play for us?

john: it's called 'what women do to men.'

(tcs play 'what women do to men')

gideon: absolutely lovely stuff. 'what women do to men,' that's the first live tune in session by trash can sinatras. thanks for that.

frank: you're very welcome.

gideon: delighted to find out that there's the prospects of the fourth lp, proper. how far away are we from seeing that?

john: we're just about to finish mixing it, so it will probably be another little while. hopefully -

frank: two years.

john: hopefully before the winter arrives.

gideon: okay, has it been given a name yet?

john: it's called weightlifting.

gideon: it's called weightlifting. and in terms of when it was put together...it's been recorded at leisure?

john: i wouldn't call it leisure...

gideon: over the last year or so, maybe?

john: over the last year. we spent about a month in a place called riverside in glasgow, and it took about a month to get it all recorded. we'd written it all pretty much before we went in, so we kind of knew what we were doing, so it didn't take that long in the studio.

gideon: good, cuz i mean, i was wondering what had happened to the band and i was delighted when you played the show last may, was it, at water rats in london?

john: i think so, aye. just over a year ago.

gideon: was that the first one in a while?

john: first one down here for a while. played a bit abroad, played in america and japan over the past few years, but really, in britain, it's mostly been in scotland over the past couple of years, just been laying low.

gideon: did you enjoy that show back in london?

john: it was fantastic, it was really good...a lot of faces that we remembered from the past. it was a good night.

gideon: have they all aged well?

john: oh, they looked gorgeous, every single one of them.

gideon: i know frank, that you hate earnestness and platitutdes which is a shame because i genuinely think you make fine music.

frank: that's sarcasm i might add.

gideon: this is information i gleaned from your website. where i also saw that at least two of you despise 'mustang sally' as your most hated record.

frank: two? who's the other one, i know i'm one of them.

paul livingston: i'm one.

frank: great minds seldom differ.

gideon: absolutely. and colombo as your favorite tv show.

frank: oh yeah, mine - that's my favorite tv show.

gideon: which is fine once you get over the fact that you know who already did it...but i know that's the whole point.

frank: well that's the genius, that's what sets him apart from your quincys and your marcus welbys.

gideon: frank cannon as well. in the meantime, there's also been the release of zebra of the family. i always want to say zebra there.

john: say it then.

frank: say it if you want.

gideon: now this is a collection of unreleased material which i know is around in glasgow, has it made its way down to other record stores as well? i hope so.

john: no, we'll be selling it at the gig tonight.

frank: it's sort of something we put together to do a job really, to help us make a record and it's actually done a fine job.

gideon: what about putting together a setlist for tonight as well. how far back are you going?

john: there will be stuff from all the lps.

frank: touching it all.

john: we kind of veer toward playing the new stuff. there will be a lot of new stuff.

frank: whatever feels relevant still, you can always tell when it's coming out of your mouth, if you're cringing, it's not to be done. if it still feels like it's something worth saying, then keep harping on about it until you drop.

gideon: well that should be the philosophy. those enjoying this acoustic version of the trash can sinatras as well, there's a dvd form of it coming out soon as well, is that right?

john: oh yeah, we've been playing at a blace called brel in glasgow, just wee acoustic gigs, but had a little residency and we recorded a lot of them and we'll be editing a compilation of that to put out.

gideon: good stuff. there's more information on the website, which i'll give details of, after this second live number.

john: it's called 'got carried away.'

frank: play it out for my postman peeps.

(tcs play 'got carried away')

gideon: magnificent stuff, 'got carried away,' the trash can sinatras, who play the barfly in camden town tonight in north london. info re: upcoming gigs including one at t in the park, also record and dvd releases can be found at trashcansinatras.com. lovely stuff, thanks for many dropping by.
