tcs working on untitled fifth album
the trashcan sinatras are currently working on their untitled fifth album, likely scheduled for a late 2008/early 2009 release.
the band has been working on new songs for the last couple of years, some of which have been played in recent concerts. they spent much of 2006-2007 rehearsing - not necessarily these songs, but playing together to see what directions their ideas were going and what would come out of the rehearsal sessions.
november 15, 2007 - december 8, 2007
the actual recordings began on november 15, 2007 at stratosphere sound in new york city. the album is being produced, engineered and mixed by andy chase, assisted by rudyard lee cullers. andy and ruddy worked on the mixing sessions for the weightlifting album in 2003.
over the course of three weeks (through december 8, 2007), the band, which included grant wilson on bass and stevie mulhearn on keyboards (davy hughes was unable to make it to new york), laid down the music tracks and preliminary vocals for 14 songs:
- people
- i just don't know how
- easy on the eye
- prisons
- the engine
- down and out in new york city
- should i pray?
- astronomy
- oranges and apples
- in the music
- i hung my harp upon the willows
- i wish you'd met her
- "the abba song" (working title)
- "the jimmy webb song" (working title)
while the tracks were being recorded, andy also started the mixing process and estimates the songs are around 70% mixed at this point.
january 21, 2008 - february 1, 2008
the band was still working on the lyrics for many songs that either weren't finished or had 'placeholders' for lyrics ("scratch lyrics"). the lyrics were mostly completed for the next phase of recording, which was from january 21, 2008 - february 1, 2008 at andy's studio in martha's vineyard. john, frank and paul recorded various musical overdubs and re-recorded most of the lead and backing vocals. see the band blog for more details from these sessions.
march 8-13, 2008
frank returned to new york to record vocals for four songs that didn't have final lyrics in martha's vineyard, as well as re-recording bits of a couple other songs. twelve songs are complete - "the jimmy webb song" still doesn't have lyrics and at this point, may be cut from the album. see the band blog for more details from this session.
april, 2008
andy has been pushing the mixes along and now everyone is trying to decide on some of the details in the mixes. it's also possible that another song or two may be cut from the album, depending how they feel after listening to the mixes. there are a couple of guitar bits they're considering adding, but paul may be able to do that without going to new york. if there are further vocal changes, frank might make one more trip to new york this month, or wait until the band (likely) reconvenes in new york later this spring for the final mixing sessions.
you'll be there
stay tuned for more updates. we'll be posting photos, blog entries, videos and interviews from all of these sessions.
