frank reader answers website "kids corner" questions

august 12, 2007

1. what kind of computer do you use?

i've got an imac - its colour is "corporate cream"!

2. do you have halloween in scotland? if so, what did you dress up like when you were a kid?

do we have hallowe'en? we invented it! i can remember being taken around the streets by my sisters when i was about 5, covered in a sheet with eyeholes cut out. my sisters insist this was at hallowe'en, but i don't know that i believe them. nowadays, hallowe'en is for adults, right?

3. do you have christmas in scotland? if so, do you have santa claus or someone else?

christmas is big news over here, too, and santa claus still rules. is there anyone else?

4. if you weren't in the trashcans what would you do?

i'd be in the audience, talking loudly throughout the gig.

5. what was your favorite subject in school?

english and geography (i stared at maps a lot and copied them out - though i traced the really hard ones.)

6. when you were in school, were you a bully?

those who are bullied are in danger of become bullies themselves so yes, i would occasionally pick on people. i was certainly more picked on though.

7. how many brothers and sisters do you have? when you were kids did you play tricks on each other?

i have 5 sisters and one brother. apart from the "let's pretend it's hallowe'en" trick, my sisters liked to blindfold me and make me stand on a board that two of them would lift up slowly. they would only raise the board a few centimetres, but the trick was that they themselves would slowly bend down as they did so, and i would hear their voices falling further away, telling me i was getting closer and closer to the ceiling. then, another sister would bop me on the head with a book, making me think i'd hit the ceiling, and the lifters would pretend to panic that they had gone too far and wobble the board until i fell off. i'd be convinced i was falling from a great height, rather than the few centimetres between me and the floor.

8. how big is your family? do you have any kids or grandkids?

no kids, lots of nice nephews and neices, though.

9. Two questions from my 4 1/2 year old son.

How long have you played guitar? (strangely serious and legitimate)

i've been playing this poorly for about 25 years - i seriously think i'm getting worse. i am a great basher, though.

What is you favorite dinosaur? (he wanted it to be known that his is the Meglasaurus)

my favourite is the stegosaurus. it had a tiny head and a huge body and had to eat continuously just to survive.

10. How tall are you guys?

i think i'm 1.8 metres - about 5 feet 11 inches. not as tall as i act.

11. How good/poor is your eyesight?

very poor! it has been since i was a kid, and it's another thing that's getting worse!

12. Are you a good cook?

i can make one or two nice soups, including one i call "columbo gumbo". would you like the recipe? and steak pies!!

13. when you were a boy were you afraid of the dark or any monsters?

i'm still afraid of monsters, i just don't see them as often.

14. what was your favorite stuffed animal?

i don't think i had a stuffed toy animal when i was small. i have one now, though - a cat that sleeps on the piano and purrs.

15. Do you believe in the Lockness monster, Bigfoot, Abonimable Snowman or aliens?

i don't really. i believe in the lazy binbag men, though. they live downstairs from me and go around placing bin bags outside the other doors in the tenement, because they're too lazy to go downstairs to the big bin themselves.

16. What is your favorite color?

i like powder blue, and raspberry.

17. What is your favorite number?

ace of spades

18. What color are your eyes?

watery blue

19. How often to do you get your hair cut?

every month, even if i'm growing it out. my barber is called innes, and he had a heart attack while cutting someone's hair last year (he's only 30) and since then, i've always had him cut my hair a little shorter than normal, in case he's not around next time.

20. What is the new album going to be called?

we've not decided yet, because we don't know whether it's going to be a boy or a girl.

21. Do you like spongebob squarepants?

he sounds pretty cool.

22. what is your favorite food?

mussels and chocolate croissants.

23. what is your favorite trashcans song?

i like easy read and earlies from the old days, weightlifting and in capitals from more recent times. hopefully the new songs will stand up next to those.

24. My three ½ year old son Theo would like to know if you would play “Don’t Let Me Down”. We listen to Weightlifting in the car a lot.

it's a great song - one of my favourites. maybe one day...

25. Who snores the loudest?

the manager, of course!

26. dear trashcans - i have been a fan since i was 18 months old (in 1998) but have never been able to see you play live. do you think you will ever play an english festival again, or venue that allows under 18s or do you think i will have to wait until i am 18 in 2015? i hope you will still be together then.

we may play festivals before 2015, if we finish a record before then. can you come to scotland?

ps i got a mention in one of your competitions a long time ago but got no prize. can i have one now?

sure, you can have it now. it's a ticket to see us play in glasgow in 2003.

27. do you have a new years resolution?

to be nice.

28. Do you go to church?

i have been, and enjoyed it, but i don't go regularly.

29. What is your most favorite adventure?

i'm looking forward to john getting his driving license and giving us all a thrill!
